BINAYAK SEN

Education (post-graduate): Ph.D in Economics, Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia, 1986. Master of Science in Economics, Faculty of Economics, Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia, 1982.

Current Position: Senior Research Fellow, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (1997-to date). Division Chief, General Economics Division, BIDS (April 2001-to date).

Professional Experience: Long-term Consultant, Operations Evaluation Department (OED)/ Poverty and Human Resources Division, Policy Research Department, World Bank, Washington, D.C., July 1993-September 1995. Visiting Research Fellow, Research Administration Department, World Bank, Washington, D.C., June-August 1992.

Major Research Areas: Over 30 publications in the broad area of Economics of Poverty and Inequality, with sub-themes relating to Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction, Human Development and Human Poverty, Economic Inequality and Social Exclusion, Health-Poverty Interfaces, Anti-Poverty Policies and Programs, Disempowerment and Marginality.  Recent major researches include Fighting Human Poverty: Bangladsh Human Development Report 2000 (Project Director and Team Leader), Inequality and Its Sources in Bangladesh: 1991/92 to 1995/96. An Analysis Based on Household Expenditure Surveys (with Azizur Rahman Khan), and Markets and Growth in South Asia, 1950-97: An Interpretation (with Suresh Tendulkar).
